Batman: Assault on Arkham Basic First Thoughts

Hey everyone Michael here so I got around to watching Batman: Assault on Arkham and as far as direct to video Batman films I have seen it’s easily one of the better ones.

The animation is actually rather well done, it’s very fluid and I didn’t notice too much dip in quality, but where it shines the most is during the action scenes.  The voice acting is overall pretty good. I have to give Troy Baker props as The Joker, while it feels like he is doing subtle nods to Mark Hamill’s portrayal of The Joker he totally makes it his own.  I also like the way the Suicide Squad was introduced and how they play into the story here, and in fact this is more a Suicide Squad movie with Batman in it rather than a Batman movie with the Suicide Squad in it.

If I have to name some small negatives while I do enjoy the fast pacing of it, without giving too much away the last 10-15 minutes felt like they crammed in too much in too little time for a climax.  I also wasn’t a huge fan of the way they did the cameos that some of the other villains like Zsasz, Bane, and Poison Ivy had. It felt like you could have removed them from the movie or simply made them with any nameless grunt and barely anything would have changed.  But this is minor because the pros definitely outweigh the cons in this.

Overall like I said, Assault on Arkham is easily one of the better Batman direct to video films I have seen.  It’s short run-time made it’s pacing go by really fast and I had a lot of fun with it. I do recommend it but you have to go in seeing a Suicide Squad film with Batman in it rather than the other way around otherwise you will be disappointed by how little screen time Batman had when compared to the Suicide Squad.
